Testing one, two, three.... Just checking out the Live journal client I just downloaded. I should have downloaded this a long time ago. Let's see...I guess I'll sum up what's been happening lately: Last summer I quit my office job... ...unemployment rules!...er, except for the little money and the stress of getting another job. ...While not working, I discovered that Ellen is a great show...and that TV Land has MacGyver on at lunch time. Awesome! ...Two weeks before school started...I got a job as a Biology teacher at a local Voacational High School. Didn't think at first that I would want to go back into teaching after PC, but hey, I guess I still had the itch. ...Two weeks later I found out my wife was pregnant! I'm happy that things happened in the order that they did :-) We're really excited. We had an ultra-sound in January, but we decided to keep the gender a suprise. ...So here we are now. The "due date" is May 22nd ( a month from now!!!) but technically the baby could decided that he/she wants to come early or later...so pretty much anytime in May... Knowing that it is half me, I'm sure it's in not rush getting out. ..well that's all I got for now...I hope to update more often... cross your fingers! | | Tuesday, April 27th, 2004 | | 4:07 pm |
Space Snails from Mars
I found this as I was doing my daily CNN news sweep: Big Ass Snails!
It's a small picture so to help you see what's going on, I'll say this:
Yes, it is ONE glove covered hand holding TWO Friggin' huge snails!
I never knew they came in family size.

Ring tones...
I just recently upgraded my cell phone...not because I really wanted to, though. It was more like my carrier (who I will call XX&X so they can remain anonymous) forced me to because they weren't going to support my phone anymore. So, instead of downgrading my phone to a free phone they were going to give me (which had none of the bells and whistles I use) I decided to spend a bit more cash and get a better one...with a camera! Anyway, it was bummer to find out that the new phone didn't have a music composer app (you know, so you can compose your own "dink-dinky-dink" ring tones) but a "music DJ" app instead, which just lets you move around some premade samba beats and stuff. :-( I was saddened that I could not re-create the Lord of the Rings Theme that I had made by myself. I couldn't re-create the ditty in full, polyphonic sound. I did some searching, but it was all for naught. I found the Enya LotR song but not Howard Shore's main theme. I did find a great collection of pop music ring tones though. After listening to them, I thought to myself, "Do I really want a muzak version of Miss Aguilera's Dirrty?" To my surprise, my answer was : HELL YES!Muzak in the palm of your hand! | | Wednesday, March 17th, 2004 | | 9:47 am |
A few minutes of juvenille humor...
There is nothing more funny to a person who enjoys technology than having a machine to something out of the ordinary. Take computer for example. If you can make your computer talk back at you using foul language...that's just funny! It's like bathroom humor. No matter how old you are, it's funny...Disgusting and foul, but funny. Make the computer get fresh with you! | | Tuesday, March 16th, 2004 | | 10:23 am |
Mario Nirvana
Here's a link to impress those who have grown up on Video Games...and when I say "grown up with" I mean from the 80's (at least from the SEGA master system or the NES and beyond). This is so good, it need Darth Vader's, "Most-Impressive," l Mario NirvanaUnfortunately you need the Latest Windows Media player to stream it. You'll also need about 11 minutes of free time. In other news, I read an article about a some kid winning Super Mario Bros. in a little over 5 minutes. I wish I had that much free time. A sad day...
The following is a news story that I just became aware of from one of my Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV) group sites. I knew Fern while I was in Namibia. She and her group arrived about 6 months before I did. The work she focused on mainly was community development and AIDS awareness. I didn't know her that well, but I knew her casually from various PCV get-togethers in the capital (Windhoek). We’d all go out to a restaurant, have good times. Talk. Bond. We all knew each other in that way at the very minimum. Hey, it's Peace Corps. The whole point of it is to get to know, understand and learn from our fellow Human Beings. It's sad to hear that she's gone...especially since she was working for human rights and education. Forget about American elitism or Americans forcing their beliefs on other countries. She was a good person with a great heart and was willing to risk her life, while peacefully attempting to help others less fortunate than her... A great Human Being and what I consider a true American. Women Rights Advocate Among Dead in IraqMarch 11, 2004 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- One of two U.S. civilians killed in an attack in Iraq this week was an Oklahoman who left her law firm to join the Peace Corps, then got work helping the American-led interim government in Iraq. Attorney Fern Holland, 33, another American civilian and a translator were killed Tuesday after several gunmen posing as Iraqi police officers stopped her vehicle at a makeshift checkpoint near the town of Hillah, about 35 miles south of Baghdad. The two Americans were the first U.S. civilians working for the U.S. occupation authority to be killed in Iraq. The name of the other civilian was not immediately released. As a member of the Coalition Provisional Authority, Holland helped write the women's rights section of the new Iraqi constitution, family members said. "If I die, know that I'm doing precisely what I want to be doing," Holland wrote in an e-mail to a friend in Tulsa on Jan. 21. Holland also investigated human rights violations and set up women's rights conferences. "She believed in freedom," her sister Vi Holland said. "She believed that every man and woman born should enjoy the right of freedom." Holland, a 1996 graduate of the University of Tulsa College of Law, worked at two law firms in Tulsa before joining the Peace Corps and traveling to Namibia. She returned to the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, but didn't stay long. Her job in Iraq required her to travel almost every day on highways where snipers and roadside bombs lurked. "We stand out, and those who dislike us know precisely when we come to town," she wrote. "She was an extraordinary person who honestly wanted to help people," said Stephen Rodolf, a Tulsa attorney. "Anybody who knew her would tell you that." L. Paul Bremer, the top administrator in Iraq, has requested that the FBI investigate the slayings. It was not yet known whether the gunmen were specifically targeting coalition officials. "We're starting to form views on that," coalition spokesman Dan Senor said Wednesday | | Monday, March 1st, 2004 | | 1:32 pm |

I almost wish we didn't...
So the big story this weekend, as everyone knows....was that it was my wife's Birthday. :-)
Oh yeah, and they caught Saddam. When I heard that news, all I could think of was, "Great, now Bush's War has been justified and that bolsters his re-election chances..."

No time to be a Slacker... What is the world coming too?
Looking back at the last several postings, I notice several things:
- I enjoy cutting and pasting (I did very well in elementary art classes...I didn't even eat the paste!)
- My HTML is getting better
and...
- I've been a lazy ass compared to the entries I submitted while in Namibia
But I can explain. One, I had to push those experiences away from me for the last twelve months. You can't rest on you laurels, especially when you leave the country for two years. Otherwise the phrase, "...and one time, in band camp," becomes, "..and one time, in Peace Corps..." and no one wants to be "that guy". Most people aren't going to understand exactly what you did and how much of an impact your experiences have had upon you personal views of the world and of life. You left and the world and people that you lived with went on with their lives. Coming home and telling your stories to friends and relatives was really exciting...for the first month or so. After that, you become that "Band Camp" guy and people don't want to hear how you went shark fishing in a dingy at night and how that experience relates to them going out to some party. Things just don't mesh.
So I decided to let it go for a little bit. I gave me and Namibia some space (speaking of space...there was this one time, in Peace Corps...) Besides, I've had a lot to think about this past year (See earlier post: 8/8/03). I recently survived another lay-off at work in October. I'm no longer working with Non-profit Organizations (a co-worker of mine got my job) and I'm now working in the Federal Prgrams Department. I'm working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. On the bright side, I could go on site visits at some point (Hawaii, Alaska, Delaware...).
I have a PCV friend coming home in a week or so that has decided to stop by and visit me for a few days before he heads home. I can't wait to hear about his stories. I'm sure after that you'll hear more about some of my stories, as I'll be ready to tell some more.

iTunes...for Windows!
Downloaded iTunes this afternoon at work and gave it a test run. Too bad it doesn't read WMA files. I think that is a major setback for it. People will NOT want to re-rip all their music in AAC or MP3. Especially if they already have a large WMA base. Everything else seems to work as it should. The Radio was even able to get through the office firewall. Now I can listen to Radio Darvesh all day long! Woo-hoo! | | Friday, September 5th, 2003 | | 12:04 am |
Where did the summer go? Ramblin' on...
Ok, Sure...my summer has been chock full o'nuts. Boston, Syracuse, Miami, Labadee (Haiti), Ocho Rios (Jamaica), Georgetown (Grand Cayman), Cozumel (Mexico), London/St. Helens/Lancaster (England)... my passport got some good exercise. Wish I had frequent flier miles... I don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but as soon as it turned September in Boston, we had Autumn weather. Freaky. Bought Soul Calibur 2 this last weekend...mmm yummy fighting goodness. It's been a long time since a good fighter was on the Gamecube. Now all I need is a gaming partner's ass to kick... |
